Animals love making friends just like people do. We’ve all seen dogs become best pals with another dog in the neighborhood.
But the most interesting and unexpected animal friendships are when animals bond with another animal outside their species. That’s what one woman learned when she discovered who her missing dog had been spending time with all along.
Last Christmas, a husky named Koda went missing from her home in Manitoba, Canada. Her owner, Rachel Howatt, went looking everywhere for her, but ultimately the dog was smart enough to return on her own.
But a neighbor had a trail camera that revealed exactly what her dog had been up to this whole time:
She had made friends with a deer!
Photos revealed that Koda wasn’t scared or alone while away from home—he was just hanging out with his new friend, a wild buck.
They were seen eating, sleeping and playing together.
“It was quite something,” Rachel told The Dodo. “Based on the time they spent on frame, it looked like they spent over 12 hours together.”
“I’m amazed.. I still can’t believe this!” Rachel wrote on Facebook. “Sleeps, eats, and plays around with a buck she made ‘friends’ with.. WOW such an unbelievable pooch.”
It looks like the two had a good time together, so much so that Rachel suspects that he’ll sneak out again for another playdate.
“Huskies have such a free spirit,” Rachel told The Dodo. “It doesn’t surprise me at all that Koda was trying to make a new friend.”
What an amazing friendship! It’s amazing the relationships animals can make.
