There are thousands of animals waiting in shelters at any moment, and shelters work hard to advocate for their cats and dogs so they’ll find homes.
Social media can be a big help. Shelters post the animals’ stories and cute photos. Usually, they emphasize the hopeful pet’s best qualities: that they love to play, that they’re good with people, etc.
But one shelter went in a very different direction for one cat in a very honest post… but it paid off when people fell in love with her anyway.
Mitchell County Animal Rescue in North Carolina is home to a cat named Perdita. On January 22, they posted an ad trying to find her a forever home… because apparently, they couldn’t stand her anymore.
“Meet Perdita, not for the faint of heart,” the post reads, describing her as a “jerk” and the “World’s Worst Cat.”
Along with some angry-looking photos, the shelter explains that Perdita enjoys “staring into your soul until you feel as if you may never be cheerful again,” and her hero is the undead demon cat from Pet Sematary.
She dislikes joyful things like Christmas, hugs, and even kittens because they’re “too chipper.”
They also advertise a “free adoption,” and honestly we’re surprised they aren’t paying someone to take her off their hands.
Obviously, this is all in good fun. The shelter wants Perdita to find a good home, and they’re just being playful about her rather intense personality.
Because in a way, cats are like our grouchy spirit animals. From Garfield hating Mondays to Grumpy Cat hating everything, we can all relate to a sour-faced cat.
The funny approach paid off: Perdita’s post was shared nearly 7,000 times, and even inspired people to donate over a thousand dollars to the shelter.
Perdita was a star… not that she cared. “Perdita is not impressed with her new found fame,” Mitchell County wrote in a follow-up post. “She is being her spicy self.”
They reported that over 50 people reached out asking to adopt Perdita. The shelter is still going through applications, but things are looking up for this eternally pessimistic cat.
“Love and support for Perdita has poured in from all over the world,” the shelter wrote. “We are thrilled that so many people are passionate about cats like her. We will keep everyone posted about her adoption when it happens.”
We love this cat, even if she is a “jerk”! We hope she finds a good forever home with someone who loves her for who she is!
