A distressed mom dog not only had to cope with being dumped on the doorstep of a shelter without food or water but she’d also just given birth.
Staff at Sacramento SPCA (SSPCA) in California believe the pit bull mom dog was outside all night on a dirty blanket with her ten puppies she had just given birth to.
“We’re not sure how she came to be at the shelter,” Sarah Varanini, foster care coordinator at the SSPCA, told The Dodo.
“Although she was still bleeding a little, there wasn’t the large amount that you would usually see from a birth, especially of 10 pups, so we are assuming that she gave birth some place else and was dropped at the shelter shortly after,” she said.
Staff were concerned that in finding them a new home the beautiful family would have to be separated which could harm the health and happiness of the puppies.
Thankfully they found a foster dad to look after the brood until they are old enough to be adopted and he was thrilled with his new additions.
The pit bull mom is thought to be about a year old and has been “amazingly sweet” to both the SSPCA staff and her current foster dad, Sarah said according to the Dodo.
She said despite being okay about strangers handling her babies she’s a good mom.
“She [was] … just left there,” Sarah recalled. “It’s a testament to the bonds of motherhood that she didn’t up and walk away during the night. She’s very dedicated to those little babies.”
The family is expected to stay in foster care for two months until the puppies are old enough to be put up for adoption.
