It’s a commonly believed stereotype that dogs and cats are natural enemies, but that couldn’t be further than the truth.
In reality many dogs and cats become unlikely best pals and playmates—and dogs can even be very caring and protective of cats.
That was the case for one dog who stepped up to become a much-needed friend and guardian to the tiny stray kitten he welcomed into his home.
A few months ago a woman named Morgan heard the faint sound of a kitten’s purring outside her farm.
She went out and discovered the tiny cat in a tree stump, all alone. Morgan already had five pets, and told Love Meow that she wasn’t planning on bringing in another. But when it was clear the poor cat was all on her own with no mother in sight, she knew she had to take her in.
“When it got dark we got nervous about her because we live on a farm where foxes come around a lot,” Morgan told Love Meow. “So I went out and brought her inside. She couldn’t see a thing and was covered in fleas.”
The cat was so tiny she named her Polly after the Polly Pocket toys.
It’s a scary ordeal for any kitten—but Polly soon knew she was safe thanks to one of her new siblings.
Pax, Morgan’s 13-year-old dog, stepped up to be her protector.
Since Polly was so young, she needed someone to act as her mother. Morgan fed her milk from the bottle, and Pax helped the kitten clean herself after.
“Before she could bathe herself, Pax would clean all the bottle milk off her,” Morgan said.
It was clear these two were forming a real bond.
“He has taught her so many dog things, including an off barking noise she makes.”
Polly is now five months old, and been growing up into a happy, playful cat—thanks in part to the guidance of her best friend, Pax.
“They sleep together and play with the same toys,” Morgan told Love Meow. :She loves to race at the speed of light and pole vault off him.”
What a beautiful friendship! It’s amazing how protective dogs can be, knowing when another creature needs a helping hand.
