Dogs can be incredibly sweet when it comes to babies. They’re natural protective instincts seem to kick in the moment a newborn comes home, and they step up to care for their new human.
And sometimes it happens even before the baby is born. That’s what one mom-to-be realized when her dogs had a very heartwarming reaction to her baby bump.
Jess Christoffers is the owner of two dogs, Rocky and Diogee. Rocky was adopted just recently, because she wanted Diogee to have a friend to play with when she has her new baby, according to The Dodo.
But instead, both dogs give all their attention to her. Jess has noticed that ever since she became pregnant, the dogs’ demeanor has changed, and they seem more attached and protective of her and her baby:
Rocky loves to lay on his mom’s belly as if protecting the baby. Jess took some photos of the adorable sight and posted them to the Dogspotting Facebook group, and the internet fell in love.
It’s not just Rocky—his new dog brother also loves to stay by mom’s side.
“They’re both constantly attached to me,” Jess told The Dodo. “Diogee used to greet my boyfriend at the door but now he sits up and just stays with me.”
She also says that he’s gotten increasingly protective of the household: “Delivery drivers don’t even like coming near our living room window. It’s gotten worse closer to the due date.”
Changes in a dog’s behavior aren’t uncommon during their owners’ pregnancies. Experts say it’s just their reaction to changes in the household.
“Your dog is smart enough to pick up on these changes during pregnancy, both in a physical way—which is how your body will be changing, your stomach, your smell — and in an emotional way, such as your feelings and your mood,” Dr. Rachel Barrack told the American Kennel Club.
Jess says the two dogs can’t wait for the new arrival—and it’s clear they’re going to be the baby’s most loving and loyal protectors!
