The fact that people still find excuses to “trophy hunt” in 2020 is beyond me, but, sadly, that’s the world we live in.
A world where people take pride in stalking and shooting majestic creatures for nothing more than their own twisted sense of macho fulfilment.
Well, a recent case of suspected trophy hunting may just be one of the most disturbing we’ve come across. In any case, it’s certainly one of the most upsetting. It involves the slaying of one of Kenya’s only white female giraffes and her young calf.
As per the BBC, rangers found the carcass of the female and her calf in a village. A third white giraffe is still thought to be alive – and believed to be the only one remaining in the world.
Mohammed Ahmednoor, manager of the Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy, revealed that the giraffes had last been spotted more than three months ago.
“This is a very sad day for the community of Ijara and Kenya as a whole. We are the only community in the world who are custodians of the white giraffe,” Mr Ahmednoor said.
“Its killing is a blow to the tremendous steps taken by the community to conserve rare and unique species and a wake-up call for continued support to conservation efforts.”
I simply can’t understand why anyone would want to kill such a magnificently beautiful animal. Reports state the hunters have not yet been identified, while their motive also remans unconfirmed.
Sometimes I despair of the human species and its ability to destroy everything else around it. My heart bleeds for the two white giraffes today.
