When the California wildfires got closer to Andrea Gaylord’s home, she had no choice but to leave.
It was a race against time to escape the fire that killed 85 people in Northern California. Andrea called out to her dogs, brothers Madison and Miguel, but they didn’t respond.
Believing that they had already fled the area sensing danger she had no choice but to leave without them.
Devastated by the loss of her animals and her home Andrea returned to her wild-ravaged house a month later to assess the damage only to discover an unbelievable sight and something that warmed her heart.
Andrea talked to Today about the moment she had to leave her dogs, not knowing where they were.
“It was the worst feeling in the world,” she said. “It’s like you have to choose. The whole time I thought, ‘What was going to happen to those dogs?’ It was horrible.”
The area was cordoned off and Andrea was unable to return to her home. Meanwhile, animal rescue workers found Andrea’s dog Miguel in a nearby town and he was returned to Andrea by Shayla Sullivan, a volunteer with K9 Paw Print Rescue, Today reports.
Andrea was eventually allowed to return to her home in December only to be met with the most astonishing sight. As she pulled up to her home her other dog Madison was sitting next to the remains of her fire-ravaged home.
“It was like there is a higher power,” Andrea said. “It was like a sigh of relief. It was affirmation that these dogs are survivors.”
It seems animal hero Shayla Sullivan had also rescued her other dog by leaving food and water for him so he could survive until he was reunited with an overjoyed Andrea.
“He had stayed to protect what was left of his home, and NEVER gave up on his people!” Shayla wrote on Facebook. “I’m so happy I’m crying as I write this! He didn’t give up through the storms or the fire!”
I’m so glad Andrea got her dogs back, our four-legged friends are such a comfort in times of need.
