Normally it’s a very bad idea for a police officer to fall asleep on the job… but we’ll make an exception for this little guy.
The Bristol Police Department, in Rhode Island, recently got a new recruit on their team: a puppy named Brody, who was hired to be the department’s first K-9 therapy/comfort dog.
Officer Brody will be an invaluable part of the team, and will show up at schools, libraries, senior centers & community events.
To make things official, the department even gave him his own swearing-in ceremony at the police station.
It was a big day for Brody… however, he’s still a growing puppy, and puppies like to sleep…
…and he slept through the entire ceremony!
“We put him down on the desk and he was just so comfortable that he lay down and fell asleep,” Brody’s handler Officer Keith Medeiros told The Dodo.
But they understood and didn’t wake the dog. Medeiros was happy to take the oath for him and thank a few people on his behalf.
“He plays really hard and he sleeps really hard,” he said. “When he’s not playing, he’s sleeping, which is kind of tough because he sleeps a lot.”
Brody joined the force in the midst of COVID-19 social distancing rules, so he hasn’t been around as many people as the officers hoped.
But on the other hand, the cute puppy has been doing his job—bringing comfort and joy during this stressful time.
“People are really stressed, especially in law enforcement,” Medeiros said. “Just by walking in the police department with Brody, people immediately smile, they immediately get into a better place. They want to pet him, want to hug him and it’s just a really good thing.”
Congrats, Brody! We know you’ll be a great part of the force and make your community proud… once you get a nap in first.
