Life can be so tough for stray dogs, fending for themselves without knowing any love or kindness. It’s even harder when they have a disability, trying to survive on the streets despite everything.
That was the case for one poor dog, who scraped by on the streets for a decade before someone came along to help.
In January 2018 the rescue Hope for Paws got a call about a senior dog who was seen roaming the streets. Rescuers Lisa Arturo and JoAnn Wiltz headed out to investigate.
They discovered the old dog—his cloudy eyes indicated he had lost some or all of his vision. Neighbors informed them that the dog had been roaming the streets for nearly 10 years.
It’s impossible to imagine what this dog went through over that decade on his own. Hope for Paws decided to give him a second chance, taking him off the street and getting him help.
But after so many years fending for himself, the dog was naturally wary of humans, and ran away whenever they approached.
Eventually, they were able to get a leash around the skittish stray. While he was intially distressed by the experienced, it was all for the best—the dog was finally safe and on his way to a better life.
They named him Pharaoh, and brought him to his new foster home provided by Frosted Faces.
By the end of Hope for Paws’ video, things are looking up for Pharaoh: he has lots of other foster dogs to play with, and while he was still a little nervous, he warmed up to his rescuers enough that they could pet him.
They discovered Pharaoh was completely blind, but they made an appointment to try to improve his vision.
(Plus, they got him a stylish bowtie.)
The video of Pharaoh’s inspiring rescue went viral on YouTube with over 4 million views… but that wasn’t the end of the story.
A few months after his rescue, Frosted Faces announced that Pharaoh had finally found his forever home.
The search wasn’t easy—despite some improvements, Pharaoh was still blind and frightened, and they needed to find a family who would be okay with that and give him the unconditional love he needed.
Luckily, they found the perfect couple to take him in, with a proven track record of caring for rescued shepherd dogs like Pharaoh.
“I would give these people my own dogs,” the foundation’s Facebook post reads. “They were so compassionate… It was refreshing to be in the presence of such selfless, kind, patient people.”
We’re so glad Pharaoh was rescued, and after 10 years on the streets finally has a loving forever home!
