Emu was a dog who looked as though he’d spent most of his life on the streets.
He was dirty and skinny with a look of helplessness in his eyes and was nervous of anyone who went near him.
When he was carried into a veterinarian clinic at the suggestion that he be put down the vet had another plan and it wasn’t to immediately end his life.
The vet treated him and then found a foster family so he could be looked after while he went through the healing process.
Emu’s foster family then reached out to Sidewalk Specials, a South African-based nonprofit, which rescues dogs from abusive situations and off euthanasia lists.
Staff there suggested the vet bring Emu to an adoption day.
When the big day came a nervous Emu sat with other dogs as animal lovers came in hoping to find their forever pet. Staff thought the nervous old street dog would be overlooked but a family took one look at him and fell in love.
They even stayed with him all day so Emu could get used to them and feel safe enough to go home with them.
Along with his exciting new start in life he was given a new name: Nutzie and to see this sweet dog two months on he is hardly recognizable compared to the weak street dog who was carried into the vets.
Nutzie even has a dog sibling, Sahara and the two are inseparable. Nutzie now has the life he has always dreamed of.
Looking at the before and after pictures of Nutzi, I can’t believe it’s the same dog; he looks younger.
Who knows if Nutzi would even be alive today if it wasn’t for one family understanding how important it is to adopt a dog rather than shop for one.
