Georgia, an Australian shepherd mix, has had a tough life full of uncertainty and heartbreak.
She was found homeless and pregnant, living next to a gas station near Arizona.
Sunshine Dog Rescue took her in and the Phoenix-based shelter cared for her until she gave birth to her litter of puppies. Clearly a life of trying to survive on the streets had taken its toll on Georgia and her entire litter died after they were born premature.
Staff tried to comfort the mourning dog but she was inconsolable after such an immense loss.
“I’ve never had a mom dog lose a whole litter before,” Anita Osa, founder of Sunshine Dog Rescue, told ABC 15.
“The best way I could describe it was she was frantic. It was so sad, she was looking for those babies. She tore up the toddler mattress we had her on, trying to find her babies.”
Staff tried washing all her bed linen but said Georgia could still smell her babies and was desperately trying to find them.
Eventually they posted an image on social media asking for the public’s help in suggesting ideas of ways they could help Georgia get through such a tragedy.
Anita said they were connected to a trio of orphaned kittens with a request for Georgia to feed and care for them.
“I introduced them to her gently. I first brought one out and let her sniff it, and she seemed to accept it, so I brought the others out,” she said. “It’s amazing to see how she instantly calmed down.”
Anita wasn’t sure whether the animals would accept each other but added the need to be cared for and to care for something is far greater for these animals.
“I think for the kittens, they have no idea that Georgia is a dog,” she explained.
“They do nurse on her. She cleans them and everything but the bond is strong. It’s really something to see, she protects those kittens just as if they were her babies,” said Anita, as per ABC 15.
Animals set the best example for showing how love overcomes all our differences.
