It’s always heartbreaking when a pet passes away, but sometimes the best thing to do is to move forward and open your heart to another pet in need of a good home.
That was the case for one grandma, who wanted a new puppy more than anything — and her dream came true thanks to a surprise gift from a family, captured in a sweet viral video.
Alexandra Del Cima, from California, knew her grandparents desperately wanted a new pet in their lives: “My grandparents last dog passed away very unexpectedly & sudden last year,” she wrote on Twitter. “They’ve been asking for a puppy for months.”
In January 2020, Alexandra’s family decided to give grandma the surprise of a lifetime. They handed her a cardboard box, saying it was just “knitting and stuff” that someone was returning to her.
However, it was soon clear that this box contained something very special. “Oh my god!” the grandma exclaims.
She opened the box… and there was a puppy!
The puppy, a 9-week-old Shih Tzu and Maltese mix, was a surprise gift from her mom and granddaughter.
Alexandra told Storyful that they weren’t planning on getting grandma a new puppy, but when a friend’s dog had a litter of puppies, they knew it was the perfect opportunity.
“Everything just lined up perfectly so we felt it was meant to be,” Alexandra said. “Her reaction was far better than anything I could have ever imagined.”
Indeed, it’s as perfect a reaction as you could ask for: grandma breaks down in happy tears and hugs her new puppy close.
