It’s hard to believe that anyone would abandon an innocent animal in the middle of nowhere, but sadly that was the case recently for seven poor Husky puppies, who were left on the side of the freeway.
But now, these unwanted pups are safe and sound — and looking for new homes.
According to the Rancho Coastal Humane Society, a good samaritan found the puppies, believed to be about 8 weeks old, in a box on the side of a San Diego freeway.
It was a sad but not unfamiliar sight. Too many people abandon their unwanted pets in the middle of nowhere, not caring what happens to them, instead of properly rehoming them or surrendering them to a shelter.
“There are lots of options for people with puppies or kittens that they’re unable to care for. There are a dozen animal shelters and about 200 rescues in San Diego County,” RCHS spokesman John Van Zante told FOX 5 San Diego.
“If you have a litter that you cannot, or do not, want to keep, leaving innocent puppies or kittens in a box beside a freeway should never be an option.”
But now, the dogs are in good hands. They have been receiving medical evaluations, and will soon be put up for adoption. According to FOX 5, the puppies will all be spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped.
The puppies include six females and one male, and because they were discovered shortly before Halloween, they’ve all been given names related to the holiday and movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas: the male pup is named Jack Skellington, while his sisters are Coraline, Zero, Oogie Boogie, Sally, Pumpkin and Ghost. (Their new families are free to rename them something less seasonal, however.)
The puppies will soon be put up for adoption from Rancho Coastal Humane Society. They ask interested adopters to check their website for updates.
According to FOX 5, the adoption fee for adopting a puppy from RCHS is $195, with a $50 deposit that can be refunded with a puppy training certificate.
It’s heartbreaking that these puppies were abandoned like that, but we’re glad they’re safe now — and hopefully they’ll soon all be on their way to great new homes.
