Every shelter animal wants nothing more than to find their “forever home,” but some find it more difficult than others. Older pets have a tough time finding getting adopted, often passed over in favor of puppies and kittens, even though older animals deserve plenty of love too.
The waiting can be especially hard this time of year: it’s sad to think about all the pets who will spend Christmas without a home of their own.
But now, one shelter is on a mission to grant a Christmas miracle for one sweet senior cat by finding her a home.
A cat named Farrah ended up at the RSPCA in Portsmouth in July, after her previous owner passed away. Farrah is 15-years-old, a senior in cat years, and while it’s difficult enough suddenly landing in a new environment in your twilight years, Farrah also hyperthyroidism that caused behavioral issues.
“This made her behavior quite unpredictable and Farrah did not like being touched and would often nip you,” the RSPCA wrote. But the cat has since underwent a thyroidectomy, and is now “much calmer.”
“A couple of staff members have been working very closely with Farrah and she has started to thrive, with the help of some treats, she’s a real foodie!” RSPCA writes. “She can be an absolute sweetheart who enjoys some gentle fuss but will let you know when she’s had enough.”
While Farrah’s personality was beginning to shine through, it was still difficult to find her a forever home. On top of the difficulty of finding someone willing to take in a senior cat, they also needed to be experienced cat owners in a household with no other pets or children.
Sadly, no one has been interested yet in adopting Farrah, and it seemed the cat would enter the new year still waiting for a home. But the RSPCA, not willing to see this sweet cat spend the rest of her life in a shelter, has increased their efforts to find Farrah a home — in time for Christmas.
“All Farrah wants for Christmas is a warm and cosy home to call her own,” Kate Luxford, cattery supervisor at RSPCA Stubbington Ark, told Metro.
“She is looking for a special someone to share her twilight years with,” saying that finding a forever home is the only wish on Farrah’s Christmas list.
Finding Farrah a perfect home is still no easy task, but Christmas is a time for miracles, so hopefully this sweet old cat makes it “home for Christmas” this year.
And the family that does take her in will get a gentle, friendly cat who knows how to take things easy: Kate says Farrah’s favorite thing to do is just sit around and relax all day, and occasionally cuddle up with her favorite humans.
“Her favorite thing to do is to rub around your legs when you’re sitting in a chair. She could do this all day long.”
We hope this beautiful senior cat finds her forever home soon — it would be amazing to see Farrah adopted by Christmas!
