After being abandoned, a dog named Ghost found an unexpected new family to live with: a pack of wild coyotes.
According to FOX 5 Vegas, Ghost is believed to have been abandoned in the desert as a puppy, in the outskirts of Henderson, Nevada near Las Vegas.
But for months, locals spotted the dog with some unexpected friends: Ghost had been accepted by a pack of wild coyotes, and by some accounts was even the pack’s leader.
“It seems like he may have been put out there between seven and eight months and somehow or another, the coyotes just accepted him,” Susan McMullen of the Southern Nevada Trapping Team told FOX 5. “He was actually just running with them and eating with them.”
Despite many sightings and reports that go back to July, Ghost proved to be elusive. Attempts by humans to approach the dog just made him run off.
But Ghost became injured, and it was feared that the coyotes would turn against him. The Southern Nevada Trapping Team decided it would be best if Ghost’s adventures in the wild came to an end and he was brought back into human care.
McMullen and partner Timi Zondiros launched a plan to bait the dog into a crate using food, and it was a success. Despite his time as a “coyote,” Ghost didn’t resist human help.
“He just sat down. I think he was also relieved,” Zondiros said.
“He is the sweetest most loving dog… he comes up to you he wants to be petted, he wants to be held.”
However, Ghost’s time in the desert with the coyotes has left him with a number of medical issues. He had rocks in his stomach from eating rocks, and scars on his body from fights. He also has several infections and his broken toe needs to be amputated. A GoFundMe page, set up to pay for Ghost’s vet bills, has raised over $14,000.
But despite everything, Ghost is a sweet, loving dog, and he will be put up for adoption once he is healed up.
“We would like for him to be adopted in a loving home where he is going to have a bed, a couch, people to hold him, “Zondiros told FOX 40. “I believe he is going to be the best dog because they are the most grateful, the ones that are rescued… they feel it.”
It’s incredible to think that Ghost has survived on his own all this time as part of a coyote pack! But we’re also glad Ghost is now in the hands of caring humans who will help him find the home he deserves.
