Last week, a dog was found outside a Burger King parking lot — and a note revealed his heartbreaking story.
Last Monday, a local citizen found a dog outside a Burger King in Monee, IL, a suburb of Chicago.
The dog had a note paperclipped to his collar, revealing that he had been left behind by his owner.
“Hi I’m King,” the note reads. “I’m a good boy. Love to hug & kiss.”
The note also revealed the dog’s birthday is July 22, 2018. It was clear the owner was trying to get rid of the dog but still hoped he would go to a good home.
The village of Monee Police Department shared the story online, saying it “broke our hearts.” The officers also confirmed that he was a good boy, saying that he “really does love to hug and kiss.”
King was brought to the South Suburban Humane Society. They asked King’s owner to come forward, hoping to help.
According to an update from the humane society, King’s owner did come forward, and explained that the story was more complicated than it originally seemed.
“After suffering a major medical event, she had moved in with family and has been trying to get back on her feet,” the South Suburban Humane Society wrote. “Her family member abandoned King without her knowledge and she is devastated.”
The owner brought all of King’s toys, food and treats, and after a “tearful conversation,” they came up with a plan to keep the two together: the owner is going to look for a new place to live, and in the meantime a staff member agreed to foster King.
Abandoned dog cases like this always generate strong feelings from the public, but sometimes unforeseen complications like this happen. Both the South Suburban Humane Society and the Village of Monee Police Department urged people to be understanding.
“We know that some of you may have differing opinions on this and that’s ok but in this situation we #ChooseKindness,” the police department wrote, writing that King was “never placed in danger” and that the love between King and his owner was “very evident.”
“Every single day, every one of us has a choice to choose empathy and kindness,” the humane society wrote, saying that King was “extremely well taken care of” and “deeply loved” by the owner.
SSHS said the owner is a “very proud person” who isn’t comfortable accepting help from the public, so they are not taking donations at this time.
