It was a truly bananas day in Indianapolis yesterday, after a monkey named Momo escaped from home and led police on quite a wild chase.
According to FOX 59, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a call on Wednesday about a monkey who escaped from his home on the east side of Indianapolis.
Witnesses saw the monkey running down the street: he was startled by a barking dog and ran up into some trees. Officers from Indianapolis Animal Care Services arrived on the scene with a net and the monkey’s owner tried to coax him down with a peach, but to no avail.
The IMPD continued to search the area for the escaped monkey. They received calls about possible sightings, and there were some minor injuries reported, though it’s not clear if they were caused by bites. The department urged locals not to approach Momo if found.
According to CBS News, Momo is a patas monkey — the fastest primate in the world, with running speeds up to 35 miles per hour. So it’s no surprise that Momo was hard to catch.
But after a widespread and hours-long search, Momo has finally been found and returned to his owner safe and sound.
“Momo the monkey has been captured safely,” the IMPD wrote on Twitter, with a photo of Momo back in his owner’s arms. “That was more than enough monkey business for us.”
“Awww, Momo looks embarrassed,” one person replied on Twitter. “Glad his adventure had a good ending.”
