Every shelter animal dreams of one day getting out and going to their forever home. But some don’t want to wait to get adopted, and decide to take matters into their own paws.
Like one “escape artist” cat, who impressively managed to escape from his holding area — and it soon led to his real freedom.
On July 19, SPCA Florida shared a video of one of their adoptable cats, named Firecracker, showing off an impressive talent.
Staff had noticed the cat roaming the shelter floor, even after securing him into his holding area. They set up a camera to figure out what was going on — and soon discovered that this cat was a real Houdini.
The video shows the clever and agile Firecracker reaching his paw out of the metal kennel, and managing to lift up the latch from the outside, letting himself free — all within about 15 seconds.
(The whole video is set to Mission: Impossible style music, fitting as the cat makes a daring escape worthy of Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt.)
It’s clear that no one at the shelter ever expected any of their cats to be able to get out. It’s also clear that Firecracker had managed to do this multiple times, unable to be contained.
SPCA Florida shared the video and hoped it would help Firecracker get adopted. They wrote that he keeps escaping because he is “so ready to go to his special forever home.”
The video has been viewed over 93,000 times on Facebook, and Firecracker’s skills apparently impressed plenty of people — because within a day, he had found his forever home!
“Firecracker was adopted the next morning by a woman who saw the video,” SPCA Florida public media director Randa Richter told The Dodo. “His creativity got him adopted very quickly. That’s definitely what did it.”
Firecracker’s new owner posted a comment under the video, sharing that he is doing well in his new home. “He’s relegated to the bathroom for a week until we can introduce him to our other cat but he is awesome!” Mia Collins Stutzman wrote.
What a clever cat! We’re so glad that Firecracker has found his forever home — hopefully he doesn’t sneak out too much 😸❤️
