With calm waters and serene views, Mountcharles Pier in Donegal, Ireland, is a popular spot for swimming, fishing, and relaxing, attracting many visitors.
One such visitor, a kind-hearted passerby, noticed something strange back in June.
It wasn’t until they looked closer that they realized something was terribly wrong.
As the person walked along, they soon saw a helpless little animal desperately clinging to a traffic cone. The tiny creature was stranded between the beach and the sea in a rather muddy area. After pondering for a moment, the person realized the heartbreaking truth: the tiny baby out there was a seal pup, only a few days old.
The little seal was likely clinging to the traffic cone, mistaking it for its mother. An eerie sound carried across the water, confirming that something was amiss.
The Good Samaritan had heard of an organization in Ireland that helps seals, called Seal Rescue Ireland. The organization focuses on the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of sick, injured, and orphaned seal pups.
Fortunately, a team from Seal Rescue Ireland was able to arrive at the scene relatively quickly, and the rescue operation began.
“[She was] sadly crying out and trying to suckle on the traffic cone,” Kim Townsend, manager at Seal Rescue Ireland, told The Dodo.
First, they needed to ensure that the seal pup was truly orphaned, so they waited for a while, making sure the mother wasn’t nearby.
When it became clear that no mother was coming to the rescue, the team waded into the water to retrieve the pup. Still clinging to the cone, the baby seal immediately understood that the rescuers were there to help. The rescue team gently lifted the seal and transported her to the organization’s rescue and rehabilitation center.
It didn’t take long for the little seal pup to charm her rescuers. Now safe and secure, she even managed a smile, her delightful personality bringing warmth to an otherwise sad story. Recent research increasingly shows that animals can experience emotions just as complex as those of humans. We now understand that strong feelings are a reality for a far wider range of animals than we once believed.
The seal pup was named Sea Lemon. She will stay with Seal Rescue Ireland for a while longer, where the team will closely monitor her progress and ensure she grows strong and healthy. Hopefully, one day, Sea Lemon will be able to return to the ocean, where her friends and family are surely waiting for her.
“Sea Lemon is a very serene and bright pup,” Townsend Smyth says and continues:
“She has a quiet curiosity in the world around her. She enjoys sunbathing and relaxing on her heat mat!”
Seals have inhabited Ireland’s coastlines for thousands of years, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem and recycling nutrients. Founded in 2010, Seal Rescue Ireland has saved countless seals over the years. Their tireless work makes a real difference — not just for the animals they rescue, but also for our ecosystem, and ultimately, for us as well.
“Seals in Irish waters are our ‘wolves’,” Melanie Crose, Executive Director Seal Rescue Ireland, told West Cork People.
“They’re keeping a balance in the population and also recycling nutrients. All marine mammals poo a lot, which spreads nutrients along the surface water, which is where plankton needs these nutrients to help them grow. Without plankton we have nothing and without marine mammals, it really would all come crashing down.”
