Two dogs were thought dead after landslide destroyed house — then came a miracle

When a devastating landslide destroyed an Alaska family’s home, they feared that their two dogs were killed — but days later got an unexpected miracle.

A fatal struck Ketchikan, Alaska last Sunday, causing one death and 3 hospitalizations from injuries, and critical damage to several homes.

Husbands James and Bill Montiver were among those hit by the landslide as their home was pushed 47 feet downhill into a neighbor’s home, according to a media release. Thankfully both made it out: James made it out of the home in time while Bill was later rescued by emergency responders.

Speaking to NBC News, the couple described the sensation like a jet taking off, and say Bill only survived after their dish washer protected him from a falling wall.

But unfortunately, their two dogs, Alani and Cassie, were nowhere to be found. Responders searched for the dogs but did not hear or see any sign of them.

Not only was their home destroyed, but it seemed like their beloved dogs had perished as well. But then, days later, they got some very welcome news.

Geologist Travis Watkins of the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities was assessing the scene on September 1 when he heard a whimpering sound coming from the collapsed house.

Emergency responders made a plan to enter the home, following the sound of the cries and carefully navigating the collapsed structure. Finally, they discovered the source: Alani and Cassie were there, alive and well.

“I was elated when I saw the dog’s eyes shining back at me!” firefighter/EMT Crystal Schleiff said, as quoted in the media release.

The two dogs soon reunited with their owners, who were overjoyed to have their pets back after they seemed to be gone for good.

“We are humbled and blessed that Cassie and Alani have been returned to us, and our family is together again,” James Montiver said. “We are so thankful to the first responders and to everyone who has helped us this week.”
