Dogs end up in shelters for all kinds of heartbreaking reasons, but perhaps the saddest is when their owner dies. Not only do these poor animals suddenly lose their best friend, but they are also upended from their longtime home.
Like one poor dog, who has spent over 100 days in the shelter after his owner was killed, and is still looking for a new home.
Sunny, a 2-year-old retriever mix, has been in the care of the Great Plains SPCA, in Kansas, since July 11, due to some heartbreaking circumstances.
“His entire world came crashing down when his owner was tragically killed, leaving him homeless,” the SPCA said in a Facebook post.
According to Sunny’s adoption page, he was “adored” by his late owner and “was a very happy boy” who lived a “rather sheltered life.” The combination of losing his beloved owner and finding himself in an overwhelming shelter was a major adjustment for poor Sunny.
But over time, Sunny has come out of his shell more, and his carers have seen his “cheerful and loving” personality and endearing innocence. He was placed in the care of a foster family, who called him a “fabulous dog, calm and well behaved,” but he had to return to the shelter after one of the foster’s children was allergic to him.
It has now been over 100 days since Sunny first arrived, and he’s still looking for a forever home. “We are devoted to waiting however long it takes for Sunny to find his people, but it truly breaks our hearts to see him passed up time and time again,” the SPCA wrote.
Sunny is reportedly housetrained and dog-friendly, but ideally would like to meet every member of the household to make sure everyone gets along. He could do well in a home with older children.
“I’m a big fan of outdoor adventures and will happily join you on walks around the neighborhood or even hikes,” his adoption bio reads. “I’m young and athletic, and I’d like nothing more than being active and energetic by your side, or I also love soaking up the sun.”
“I will be a very devoted boy. I just need for a wonderful someone to give me a second chance at a new life.”
It’s heartbreaking when a dog ends up in a shelter after their owner dies, and poor Sunny has been waiting over 100 days for a new home — we hope his luck finally turns around and he gets a new start soon ❤️🙏
