At the end of June the Grand Strand Humane Society in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina encountered perhaps one of their worst cases of animal abuse.
Police officers were called to a Myrtle Beach hotel room after another guest complained about a foul smell. Inside the room officers discovered an emaciated German Shepherd in desperate need of help.
Once the puppy, named Queen Sophie, was taken in by the humane society, Murrells Inlet Veterinary Hospital stepped in and provided the necessary care.
“When she came to us we knew she immediately needed emergency care,” Executive Director of the GSHS, Jessica Wnuk, said, according to CBS 17.

Sophie’s condition was grave.
“The officers warned me before I walked outside to be prepared that all we may be able to do for this sweet girl might be to ease her over the Rainbow Bridge,” Jessica wrote on the humane society’s Facebook page.
In addition to being starving and dehydrated, Sophie was covered in sores, feces, and urine, and the muscles in her rear legs had wasted away to the point where standing was nearly impossible.
Despite her extremely poor state, Sophie showed she had some fight in her.
Doctors and technicians worked extremely hard to clean and treat Sophie and help her get started on her road to recovery. As Sophie continued to receive treatment, GSHS shared updates on their Facebook.
Just a few days after she was rescued, Sophie took her first steps – something that doctors questioned whether she’d ever be able to do.

And just two days after Sophie took her first assisted steps, she started walking on her own.
Everyday Sophie has shown improvement.
“The doctors are astounded at her progress. Between her amazing spirit, her fierce will to live and all of your prayers, Sophie is beating the odds and improving every day!!” the humane society shared.
Hmmm we think Sophie may be getting a tad spoiled at Murrells Inlet Veterinary Hospital!! 😉😂💕 She is continuing to make progress every day!! ❤❤❤

Most recently GSHS shared an encouraging update about Queen Sophie – she’s gaining weight! The German Shepherd now weighs 32 pounds.
“This angel is beating all of the odds and exceeding everyone’s expectations every day!!! She is such a fighter and we love her so much!!” GSHS shared.

According to WMBF, Chistopher Sauber was arrested and charged with ill treatment of animals and torture in relation to Sophie.
This makes me so mad. How could anyone possibly treat an animal like this?
I’m glad the person responsible was caught and charged, now hopefully they’re punished for the crime.
Let’s pray that Queen Sophie continues to improve. She’s not out of the woods yet.
Share this on Facebook and pray that she regains her strength and finds a loving forever home.
