Thanks to service dogs, many people with disabilities can lead a normal life.
It is important to know that service dogs are always on duty and it’s vital that we respect the job they do.
A viral video showing a mom getting annoyed when her daughter was told she couldn’t pet a service dog clearly shows how important it is that we keep our distance from these dogs, especially when they are in training.
As a parent, it is important to teach your children that you can’t always get what you want, but it’s not always easy to accept, even for some mothers.
Service dog in training
A mom was out shopping with her daughter when they saw a woman with a dog. It turned out that it was a service dog in training.
Refused to take no for an answer
According to JaxFeed, which posted the video on YouTube, the incident happened in December 2018 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The video shows “the mother shouting at the service dog handler Megan Stoff because her daughter wasn’t allowed to pet the dog.”
The mom then argues with the handler saying: “You should have a sign saying you can’t pet” to which the handlers told her there were four signs.
Staff can then be heard replying to the woman: “It’s illegal to harass service dogs!”
Megan told Newsflare: “The mother walked away and continued about her business. Suddenly she came back to argue because she was mad the handler didn’t apologize to her.”
According to Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland you should not distract an assistance dog in any way.
“The dog is there to keep his/her partner safe. When the dog is distracted he is not paying attention to his job and his disabled human handler could very easily get hurt, ending up broken and bleeding.
“Broken and bleeding is BAD. You can’t pet Service Dogs because it’s distracting, and if a working dog is distracted because of something you do and their handler gets sick or injured, it’s your fault.”
