A woman has reportedly been jailed after abandoning her dog and two cats when she moved out of her flat, resulting in the dog eating one of the cats.
Metro say Tiffany Guest, 29, locked her cats – named Reggie and Ronnie – and her dog, Kray, in the flat when she left it.
Police later broke in to discover that Kray had eaten Ronnie after food ran out. Before that the dog had been scavenging from the bin.
Guest was yesterday handed an 18-week prison sentence, having initially fled to Malta from Warwickshire, England to escape the law.
The 29-year-old was arrested at the border when she returned to England last year, before fleeing to Malta again after being granted bail. This time she was re-arrested on October 10 this year and remanded in custody until her court hearing.
Guest was also banned from keeping animals for 15 years, but that in no way compensates for the horror Kray, Ronnie and Reggie went through.
The RSPCA released pictures of Kray’s emaciated body to spread awareness. Inspector Boris Lasserre said of the case: “It is incomprehensible to think the suffering these pets must have endured and how terrified they must have been for such a long period of time before the cats died of starvation.
“It must have been terrible for Kray to watch as the cats died in front of him.
“There was evidence the pets had scavenged to try and feed themselves as the bin contents were all over the kitchen floor.
“Just 14 days later, by being fed properly in RSPCA care he made an amazing recovery with a significant increase in weight.”
Reading about such tragedies fill my heart with sadness, but it’s only through reporting on them we can hope to spread the necessary awareness.
