Cat emerges from wildfires with only minor injuries, becomes symbol of hope for community

They say cats have nine lives, due to their knack for surviving dangerous circumstances. One lucky cat certainly cashed in one of its lives, miraculously walking out of a huge wildfire with only minor injuries after being covered in fire retardant, and has become a symbol of hope for emergency responders.

Last Tuesday, a major wildfire spread in Jefferson County, Colorado. The Quarry Fire, the cause of which is suspected arson, spread and burned an estimated 579.6 acres.

Local firefighters have been hard at work containing the fire and dealing with the remaining smoke and damage. But in the midst of this disaster, they found an unlikely bit of inspiration.

According to a post from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, a cat was rescued from the burn area. While being caught in the middle of such a large wildfire would mean doom for most animals, the cat somehow emerged with only minor injuries.

It turned out that the cat had been doused with slurry, fire-retardant material sprayed on the site by the fire department. It was enough to keep this kitty safe from the flames.

After being rescued, the cat was taken to a local animal shelter and was soon reunited with its owner.

For the emergency responders who have been busy dealing with the wildfire and its aftermath, the lucky cat served as a symbol of hope for the community.

“This cat represents our community’s difficult week and the tenacity of our community to not only persevere but come out stronger on the other end,” the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office wrote.

They joked that the cat should be named “Slurry,”

The Quarry Fire has reportedly been 100% contained, though residents may still experience some smokey conditions.

What a miracle! We’re so glad this cat survived this wildfire — thank you to the firefighters who rescued this lucky cat and helped it reunite with its owner! It’s an inspiring story amidst this disaster.
