Sometimes we don’t choose our pets… sometimes they choose us!
That was the case for one couple, who got a visit from a little kitten determined to find a new home, and quickly worked his way into their hearts.
This summer, a couple named Marc and Beata, from the Chicago suburbs, spotted a tiny stray black kitten near their patio.
He was all alone, frightened and shy. He hid under their bush, coming out only when they offered him food and water.
They couldn’t do much else at the time: they were still unsure if his mother or siblings were around, were worried about of scaring him off.
“Initially, he was scared of humans so we kept our distance but left out some food for him,” Beata told Love Meow.
But the kitten quickly warmed up to the humans. He would return every day looking for food.
While he was still afraid of other people—he would run back into the bushes if neighbors came by—he let his guard down and became more comfortable around Marc and Beata.
Soon it became clear that the kitten did not have any other home or family… and that he was determined to live with his new human friends.
“At that point, he would try to sneak into the house every time we opened the patio door,” Beata said.
The couple decided to take the kitten in, and named him Smucci.
They made Smucci feel at home, buying a playpen and toys for the new arrival.
But one obstacle standing in the way: they already had a dog named Haruki, and weren’t sure how he’d react to the kitten.
They got the animals used to each other by having them interact through the playpen. While cats and dogs aren’t thought to get along very well, these two quickly hit it off and became best pals.
“He loves to play with his dog brother, chase cat toys, perch in his cat tree or window seat and sleep with us in bed,” Beata told Love Meow.
It’s a very happy ending for this stray kitten, who ended up with the perfect forever home, just by patiently winning over his new family.
Now, he’s living the life of luxury: “Soft blankets and carpet are his favorites after growing up outside,” Beata said. “Now, he eats dinner with us instead of alone.”
Thank you to this couple for taking in this stray kitty in need of a good home!
