Dogs and cats might have a solid reputation for being age-old enemies, but the truth of the matter is that they can at times make some of the tightest duos.
In the right household and the right circumstances, felines and canines can and will thrive with each other, not just co-existing but seeing each other as family.
Anyone’s who owned both a cat and a dog simultaneously before can likely attest to this. I used to own both and I’ll be perfectly honest and say that in the beginning I was almost certain that it would end with the cat being terrified of the dog all the time.
To the contrary, though, before long they were getting on perfectly well. In fact, whenever they did disagree on something, it was the cat that seemed the more dominant of the two!
But I digress. The purpose of this particular story is to reinforce the fact that cats and dogs can mean just as much to each other as they do to other members of their own species.
The events occurred a few years ago after an explosion at a defense industry building in Donetsk City, Ukraine. The resulting fire spread quickly, devouring the surrounding area and putting any number of lives at risk.
Residents living nearby were forced to flee their homes at a moment’s notice. They didn’t have time to grab up belongings or pack bags, they quite literally had no choice but to run for their lives.
One home owner in particular managed to let his dog out into the front yard on his own way out of the house. Incredibly, though, the dog turned and darted back into the flames.
The owner was stunned, terrified and confused, but he couldn’t chase after the dog; the flames were simply too high by that point.
As an avid animal lover myself, I can only imagine the outcomes he must have been expecting: an entire neighborhood burning down; his home reduced to ashes along with his pets; he himself with no option but to watch on, helpless.
And yet he was spared that … because his dog had other ideas. The courageous hound came leaping out of the building with a kitten in his jaws. The kitten was struggling to breathe, but okay and, most importantly, still alive.
Thanks to this dog’s truly inspiring instincts, a life was saved. The kitten in question received the medical attention it needed and made a full recovery.
I mean, how awesome are dogs? I seriously hope the good boy in this story got the treats and thanks he deserves!
