It’s always heartbreaking when a dog goes missing, but it was especially devastating for one woman: the dog was not only her beloved pet, but one of the last connections she had to her late father.
But just when all hope seemed lost, she got a miracle…
According to a Facebook post from the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, two dogs went missing from their home in Albany on October 1, 2023, after someone left the gate open.
While one of the dogs was soon recovered, the other, named Bella, remained missing. The family was devastated, as Bella held a special place as a gift from a deceased loved one.
“Bella was the last gift given by a dad to his young daughter before he passed away 13 years ago,” Mohawk Hudson Humane Society wrote.
Months went by, and it seemed like she was gone for good. But on March 15, Bella’s owner Kim suddenly got the call she had been hoping for: Bella was found!
Someone from the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society had picked up the dog as a stray, and thanks to a microchip they were able to identify her as the owner. Kim immediately left work to pick her beloved dog up as quickly as possible.
Photos show the happy reunion between Bella and her relieved owner:
Bella had been missing for 166 days. The shelter said that she did “not look like she did when she went missing” and that “spotting her on the stray page would have been difficult.” She was also found miles away from her home.
MHHS says it’s a reminder of the importance of getting your pets microchipped. “Microchips are not GPS trackers. But when an animal is scanned for a chip, it gives families and animal welfare workers a chance to reunite owners and pets,” they wrote.
We are so glad that Bella is home safe and sound! Remember to get your pets microchipped!
