Firefighters praised as heroes after saving dogs from burning home, reviving one who lost vital signs

Firefighters are true heroes who are always looking out for everyone in their community, whether they be human or animal.

Recently, one group of firefighters received praise for rescuing and reviving a family dog during a fire.

On September 5, Ottawa Fire Services received a 911 call from a resident reporting smoke coming from their neighbor’s house. They arrived to the scene of the burning home and jumped into action.

After hearing reports of a resident who was going inside to retrieve multiple pets, one of the crews began searching the home for any occupants still inside. There were no humans in the home, but they located four dogs — one of whom had lost all vital signs.

It might’ve seemed like the dog wouldn’t make it — but the firefighters didn’t give up on him. They brought the dogs outside and began performing CPR and delivering oxygen, using specialized training and equipment.

“All our frontline pump trucks are outfitted with a special oxygen mask designed for pets that we carry on our trucks, and we use this quite often,” Ottawa Fire Services Public Information Officer Nick DeFazio told Yahoo News Canada. “The CPR is something we know how to do and have performed on pets.”

Thankfully, their plan was successful, as the dog with no vital signs was successfully revived. The dog was then brought to a local animal hospital for further treatment, according to their statement.

Firefighters were also able to contain the fire to the basement where it originated, preventing any further spread throughout the home. There were no signs of any reported injuries to the occupants.

Many people thanked the firefighters for their quick action, especially when it came to reviving the flatlining dog.

“Thank you for saving them doggies poor babies,” one person commented on Twitter. “Your fire station rocks.”

This is the kind of heartwarming news of another wonderful job done by our fire services that I needed to hear this morning,” another wrote.

“I love all you firefighters who went this extra mile to help save the life of this precious dog. You are hero’s to me. Thank you for another amazing job!”

But for this crew, it’s all part of the job. “When you think of protecting lives, that’s obviously humans, but that includes animals as well,” DeFazio told Yahoo.

Thank you to these firefighters for saving these dogs from this fire, and for reviving this dog after he lost vital signs! True heroes ❤️
