A dog’s life can be so different for so many of our four-legged friends. Thankfully a lot of them are adopted by a family at a young age and become part of the family for many years to come.
But not all dogs are lucky enough to have the same experience.
Melani Andrews was probably very aware of this when she visited her local animal shelter. The mother and grandmother has a lot of love in her life and wanted to share it with a four-legged friend who didn’t have the same happiness.
Staff said she arrived at the City of Sacramento’s Front Street Animal Shelter in the summer of 2017 with one question.

According to The Dodo, the 72-year-old grandmother, from Galt, California, had lost her husband and her beloved Staffordshire terrier Lola, who had been a great comfort for her.
She felt alone.
“I was feeling down and a little depressed,” Melani told The Dodo. “My grandkids came over one night, and they said, ‘Grandma, you need somebody to keep you company. You can’t just sit around here all by yourself.”
The answer was Jake.
Just like Melani, Jake had been alone for a while. When Melani asked for the oldest dog, she was introduced to Jake.
The 12-year-old terrier is a senior and has cancer in addition to skin problems. He was constantly being overlooked by people coming to the shelter wanting to adopt. Melani immediately said yes.
“Melani came to the shelter not just to find a great dog, but to save a life and give unconditional love to a dog in need,” staff wrote on its Facebook page.
Lots of love
Melani was told about the vet costs but said she was going to make the time she had with Jake, “as good as she could make it.”
She just wanted to take care of a dog in need. And give it lots of love.
Jake quickly settled in to his new loving home.
“Every day I laugh a little bit more,” Melani said. “It’s not so lonesome. I think [Jake] knows that I love him because he’ll come over to me and he’ll rub up against me and ask me to rub his backside. And then he’ll nose me with his nose. And a dog that doesn’t know that somebody loves him wouldn’t be doing anything like that.”
I am so happy that these two found each other! This is definite proof of how much a pet can mean to a human being.
