Some pet dogs can be amazing guards, protecting your home and keeping you safe from danger.
Other dogs… not so much.
Rottweillers are considered naturally protective dogs, but while six-year-old Jakey seems to have the right idea about being a “guard dog” she seems to be a little confused about what she should be guarding.
“Whenever we leave the house, Jakey deems it absolutely vital for her to protect any bread we have,” writes Katrina Frank, Jakey’s owner.
“We joke that if someone broke in, she would be like ‘IT’S OKAY, SHOOT MY MOM, BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT TOUCH THE BREAD!!!!'”
For some reason, this dog is obsessed with bread, convinced that this above all else is the thing most worth saving in the household.
“We have a bread box so she likes to hop up and pull it out of there,” Katrina told The Dodo. “If I leave it in the pantry instead, she nudges the door open and gets it out. I’ve put it in the refrigerator before and she has opened the door to get to it.”
“If I’m out of bread, she moves on to baked goods.”

Jakey always leads the family to the missing bread when asked, and, perhaps most oddly, she herself never actually eats the bread.
“She has never ripped it open, she has never eaten it,” Katrina wrote.
It’s hard to know exactly why Jakey is so attached to the bread, but Katrina thinks the dog might, in her own weird way, actually be looking out for the family after all:
“I assume she thinks it’s the most important thing to us because we use it so often,” she told The Dodo.
Well, here she is, in action (albeit a bit exhausted) 😂 Jakey the Bread Protector had to pull an overnight shift ensuring things were safe here, because mom had to work an overnight away. Garlic bread is a top 3 favorite carb in our house, so she had to be extra vigilant in making sure nobody stole it. The cat she guards it from in the video….she's a rescue we brought in thinking she was pregnant. Turned out to be a false pregnancy, so the kids went from calling her Mama to calling her Nacho Mama, Nacho for short. She's kind of an a-hole and she WILL eat any unsupervised food, so it's a good thing Jakey kept things on track here.

Jakey is unusually protective of bread and baked goods, but to her credit she’ll also look after the kids in the family, and anyone smaller than her.
“Jakey LOVES baby anything,” Katrina wrote, posting to the Dogspotting Facebook group. “My kids became hers the day they came home from the hospital. Her and I co-parent.”
“Any animals on the farm? Instant babies, whether they want to be or not. She steals chicks from the chickens, she plays with the calves and pigs nightly, she borrows kittens from their mothers when we bring in pregnant rescue cats.”
Jakey might not seem like the best guard dog in the world, but she’s always looking out for her family… or at least making sure they always have supplies for sandwiches and toast.
