A Pennsylvania man and his teenage stepson proved to be neighbors of the year, after rushing in to save a woman from a burning home — and then going back in for her pet dogs 😮🙏
On Wednesday morning, Ceytan Oliver, of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, woke up to the sound of alarms going off, according to WGAL.
Looking outside, he saw that a fire had broken out at a neighbor’s home. He says he “didn’t hesitate” to rush in to the burning home to rescue her.
He braved the fire alongside his 17-year-old stepson Joshua Jones. “We went straight to her and to grab her, and we basically got her out of there,” Ceytan told WGAL. “Basically, had to push her out of there.”
Ceytan recalled that the woman was screaming and had already suffered burns.
Not only did they save their neighbor, but they also saved two of her pet dogs. Ceytan says he tossed the two dogs to his stepdaughter who got them out while they rescued the woman.
One of the dogs ran back in and had to be pulled out by firefighters; two other dogs were reportedly still missing.
Ceytan and Joshua were praised as heroes for going above and beyond to help their neighbor and her pets, even if it meant putting themselves in harm’s way: Joshua reportedly suffered second-degree burns on his arms and face.
“It’s scary, but he’s brave. He’s a brave kid,” Ceytan said of his stepson. Always caring for the next person.”
“I don’t even know, I didn’t really think, I just like ran in,” Joshua recalled.
Ceytan said that what they did was not heroics but just being a good neighbor: “We care about our neighbors, we care about this neighborhood.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
