It’s truly shocking how cruel some people can be towards innocent animals. It’s even more surprising how resilient these animals are, never losing their spirit or will to live even after experiencing horrors at the hands of humans.
That’s the case for one sweet dog, who miraculously survived being shot in the head at close range โ despite everything, he’s a true fighter ๐ขโค๏ธ
On November 20, a Good Samaritan found a dog near the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge in Philadelphia who was in shocking condition: the dog, now named Maverick, had been shot in the head at close range and was left for dead.
Maverick had a massive gunshot wound above his left eye, but miraculously, narrowly survived due to the path of the bullet. “The bullet entered his frontal sinus, came out below left eye, then grazed and split his nose,” Dr. Alicia Royer told FOX 29. “If it had come in a different direction I think we would probably be without Maverick.”
He was rushed to PASE Animal Hospital before being placed in the care of the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Main Line Animal Rescue site, where he underwent surgeries and received round-the-clock care.
Maverick is now blind in his left eye, which will likely be removed. He is also suffering from mobility issues, a head tilt and a delayed gait. Despite the horrible situation, Maverick is a sweet dog who hasn’t lost his spirit.
“Miraculously, he is recovering… Perhaps even more stunning, Maverick loves people and, in recent days, has been seen romping around the yards at the scenic shelter site,” the Pennsylvania SPCA wrote on Facebook.
As Maverick embarks on a long road to recovery, authorities are still searching for the person who shot the poor dog. The Pennsylvania SPCA encouraged anyone with information to contact their Animal Law Enforcement’s cruelty hotline at 866-601-7722 or email [email protected]. Tips can be left anonymously.
They also encouraged people to donate to help Maverick and other abused and mistreated dogs like him. “We saved Maverick, but, there is more work to be done,” the Pennsylvania SPCA wrote. “We need your support to keep fighting against animal cruelty for animals like Maverick.”
It’s heartbreaking that poor Maverick was shot in the head, but it’s inspiring that he hasn’t lost his kind spirit. We hope this sweet dog makes a full recovery and the cruel person who shot him is brought to justice.
