It was a warm June day in 2014 when police in Cleveland received a call they will never forget.
A dog had been brutally beaten by his owner out on the street – and now he was seriously injured.
The police rushed to the scene to help the dog.
The dog’s owner had whipped him with a belt and thrown a brick at his face.
The 1 year old pitbull was severely injured and in shock. Police officer Brandon Melbar was heartbroken when he saw the dog, and drove him to a nearby vet.
The dog, who was given the name Harvard, proved to have a heart of gold. Despite all the terrible things that had happened to him, he wagged his tail at the police and wanted to show everyone love.
It’s incredible how forgiving animals can be.
Harvard’s owner was later found guilty of animal abuse and was forced to pay a fine of USD $3500.
Brandon volunteered to take care of Harvard until they could find him a forever home. But things didn’t work out the way he planned…
Brandon completely fell in love with Harvard and decided to adopt him himself.
Harvard was welcomed into a new, loving family.
Brandon didn’t have to adopt Havard; he didn’t even have to offer to foster him. None of that was part of his job description. But he did it anyway, because he’s a true animal lover.
This isn’t the first time a police officer in Cleveland has saved a dog in need. John Lyons, seen in the photo below, spent several hours comforting a tired, pregnant dog that the police department was taking care of.
He and his wife later adopted the dog and her puppies.
It’s so wonderful to see people who really care about animals. Even in the cold world we live in, it’s possible to find warmth and love – and that gives me hope for the future.
Here’s how happy Harvard looks today!
