No dog wants to be left outside in the cold all night long, with the exception of a few breeds who fare well in cold conditions.
But sadly, many dogs are left tied outside of houses as guard dogs, regardless of the weather conditions – all hours of the day and night.
In November last year, Pennsylvania banned dog owners from leaving their dogs outside alone for more than 20 minutes in temperatures below freezing.
Animal owners who break this law can be sentenced to heavy fines and even prison. There are similar laws in other states – but not all of them.
Now winter is really drawing in and many parts of the country are extremely cold. Sadly, this is a nightmare for many dogs who are forced to stay out in the cold all night long.

Many owners don’t want their dog to create a mess inside the house, or they don’t like their dog barking. But no matter which excuse they use, it’s never OK to leave a dog outside for hours in freezing temperatures.
Found dead in a dog house
One woman was convicted of animal abuse after police in Hartford found her dog chained up outside next to a doghouse. It was so cold that the dog was frozen solid.
Sadly, this isn’t the only case where a dog has frozen to death in the US this winter.
In Cincinnati, Ohio, another dog was found dead in a doghouse. The dog hut had no isolation and the dog had died in pain in the cold.
Police appeal
Police in the area recently released an appeal to the public to keep their dogs inside during cold weather – and to report if they see anyone leaving a dog outside in freezing weather.
Luckily, there is a bright side. Many of the dogs who have been found chained up outside were rescued and have been adopted into loving homes, thanks to the heroes working for animal organizations.
Detroit Dog Rescue shared a story last week that made my heart burst.
Dog Joey was abandoned in the cold by his owners and had nowhere to go to keep warm. His feet had frozen in the cold and he could no longer stand on them. When found in a barrel he had frostbite on his stomach and genitals after lying on the cold surface
If it wasn’t for Detroit Dog Rescue, he wouldn’t be alive today.
Now Joey is going to get the care he needs before he can be adopted into a new home.
It warms my heart that he has a happy ending, but at the same time I can’t help but think of all the other dogs who are left out in the cold right now.
No dog deserves to be treated this way – and it should be illegal to leave animals out in the cold in every country.
