It can be lonely for a dog in an animal shelter, living in confinement and just waiting for a forever home.
All these dogs just want to be loved—and one dog shows just how these animals are in want of human companionship.
Speck is a 2-3 year old collie mix who was taken to Bullock County Animal Shelter in Alabama.
He was a perfect dog in so many ways: friendly, up to date on all his shots and medical tests, and good with kids. But like all shelter dogs he had to wait for the right family.
But Speck was so eager to be adopted and so longing for human touch that he couldn’t help but reach out to anyone who passed by: he would always stick his paw out from behind the bars to say hi.
“All he wants is people love,” shelter director Desiray Miracle-Wilder told The Dodo.
All Speck wants is to be touched by a person—it’s his favorite thing in the world.
“He just wants you to touch him,” Desiray said. “If you sit down, he’s laying on you, if you hold his hand, he’ll hold your hand, if you scratch his belly, he’ll roll over.”
She filmed a video of Speck’s heartwarming habit, and posted it on Facebook. In a week it’s already been viewed nearly 150,000 times.
People fell in love with Speck… and it led to a happy ending for the friendly dog: he got adopted!
“He will be running a 26 acre farm with Mike, his family, and 2 fur brothers!” Desiray wrote in a Facebook update. “We are so excited.”
It shows the power of social media: not only did Speck find a home, his viral fame brought attention to the shelter.
“Not only did Speck get adopted due to this video of his cuteness but he also helped a few other fur babies get rescued and he got us some food donations!” she wrote.
“My heart is so full from all of the love everyone has shared and all of the messages wanting to give Speck a home or help however they can.”
We’re so happy for Speck! With his new forever home he’s going to get all the love and attention he’s always wanted!
