When residents of a Los Angeles neighborhood first found Castiel, they thought he was just a regular homeless dog, albeit one in very bad condition. He was skinny as a rail, covered in lice and large parts of his coat was missing.
The locals immediately contacted an animal welfare organization. But little did they know, Castiel wasn’t just any dog.
The pointy-eared gray dog was actually a wolf hybrid. This meant the shelter couldn’t take him due to him being a wild animal.
“New Boy,” as he was called, was from a breed known to be difficult to take care for, as wolf hybrids can be very unpredictable. If the shelter couldn’t find an alternative home, Castiel would have to be destroyed.
Fortunately W.O.L.F Sanctuary takes these beautiful creatures in, and Castiel was taken to their Colorado location to start a new life.
It was the start of an amazing story about a dog who not only found a home but also found genuine love and friendship.
When Castiel was found, he was walking around a Los Angeles suburb with a makeshift collar on, so many people thought he had an owner. But his skittish behavior and malnourished body got the neighborhood worried and some local residents decided to get the needy hound some help.
First, Castiel was taken to a local dog shelter. There it was discovered that he was about a year old and was a wolf hybrid.
When Castiel arrived at the W.O.L.F Sanctuary, he was so scared, he wouldn’t even look at the other animals. He sat in a corner and refused to move.
Fortunately the staff was able to bathe and treat him — which he desperately needed, considering he was riddled with parasites and had mange.
Slowly but surely the wolf dog began to recover. The rescue center held a competition to name the new animal, and the winner was “Castiel.” It’s a reference to the television series “Supernatural,” where Castiel is an angel of resurrection.
It’s not hard to see why Castiel got this name. He soon began his transformation — his fur grew back, his infections disappeared and he gained weight.
The staff at the sanctuary decided it was time for Castiel to go into the big barn and meet his new friends.
Castiel had lived such a lonely and neglected life, he was quite shy at first. He didn’t know how to act with other animals.
Castiel kept himself to himself to start with and enjoyed the tranquility of nature.
However, the staff at W.O.L.F Sanctuary saw the progress he was making and watched him become more sociable every day.
After introducing him to several female wolves (a little like “wolf dating”), the staff introduced Castiel to Tenali, a wolf dog who had been rescued from Wisconsin.
The 3-year-old female was both kind and energetic. She was also very interested in Castiel.
The couple started to spend more and more time together. Michelle Proulx, director of the W.O.L.F Sanctuary, says, “After a couple of days, Castiel realized that she wasn’t going to hurt him.”
Just like us, it took the right individual to open Castiel’s heart, and she also helped him heal from his traumatic past.
Now the bond between these two wolf dogs is growing stronger every day and Castiel seems happier and healthier than ever before.
