Cheech was an incredibly tiny two-year-old dog living on the streets of Texas when he was picked up and taken in by the City of Waller Animal Shelter and Rescue.
Staff thought he might be scared or nervous to be at the shelter with the other animals – but what he did next surprised them all.
While he was hanging out in his kennel he started making strange facial expressions. Staff thought he might be anxious. But then Cheech gave them the cheekiest smile and won them all over.
“I went into the kennel to check him out and yelled for the other volunteers to come look,” Leah Sipe, director of the City of Waller Animal Shelter and Rescue, told The Dodo. “They thought I was insane and that he was snarling, when I stuck my hand in the cage I thought they were going to pass out. He’s as friendly as can be!”
Leah wanted to share this charismatic dog with the world and posted a photo of him online smiling – the internet immediately fell in love with this cheeky dog and more than 50 people came forward with requests to adopt him.
Staffs at the shelter were ecstatic that so many people wanted to give Cheech the love that he deserved and began looking though all the applications to find the perfect one. Would they find the best one for this lovable grinning pooch?
Leah said one applicant stood out; a woman who had lost one of her dogs to cancer leaving her remaining dog Dusty desperate for a new canine companion that could help him through this difficult time.
A meeting was set up for Cheech with Dusty and his owner and it was love at first sight. All Cheech wanted to do was cuddle with the pair and staff knew they had found the perfect family for Cheech.
