We often hear the saying ‘being in the right place at the right time’ and dog walker Jane Harper knows this better than most after a horrific find in a river.
The heroic dog walker was out along the River Trent, in Nottinghamshire, England, when she spotted something that shocked her and a nation of animal lovers.
But thanks to her being in the right place at the right time a dog’s life was saved and an animal cruelty investigation is now underway.
Jane spotted a dog in the water who wasn’t moving. She feared the worst and thought he was dead until she got closer and realized the horror this dog was being forced to endure.
Looked like a dead dog
She handed her own dogs to her friend and ran into the freezing cold waters to assist the suffering hound. It wasn’t until she got into the water, she discovered the dog’s leash was tied to a rock.
“It looked like a dead dog, and then it blinked so I got [Joanne] to hold my dogs and went in,” Jane told BBC News.
“We thought she might have just got caught in the river but it was only when I tried to take her out I couldn’t move her.
“The water was so murky you couldn’t see the rock at first. It was horrific.”
The dog had managed to rest her head on a rock so she could breathe but as Jane pulled her out, another woman came running with towels to wrap around the dog while a man offered his sweater.
“She was absolutely frozen – we all thought she would die. It was very emotional,” she told BBC News.
Animal cruelty
After she was rushed to the nearest veterinary clinic the dog was found to have a chip which showed her name was Bella and revealed the names of her owners.
A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty, according to The Mirror newspaper
Police said despite the dog being very sick she is showing signs of improving and there is hope that she will survive her horrific ordeal.
