Images have been released of the injuries a three-year-old horse sustained after a vicious beating by teenagers.
The pony was spotted alone and distressed in West Dublin, Ireland, and passersby called My Lovely Horse Rescue (MLHR) for help in rescuing her.
Volunteers arrived at the scene along the Grand Canal where the injured horse had been spotted but couldn’t locate her.
As it got darker it proved impossible to locate her but in the early hours of the next morning volunteers working with police were able to find her.
Her head was dropped “heartbreakingly low” and her body was in a “horrendous condition”, as reported by Dublin Live.
The horse, named by MLHR staff as Jenna, had lumps all over her body and a badly swollen face.
“She was weak, really really weak,” said Martina Kenny, co-founder of MLHR as per Dublin Live. “Her head was low.
“We didn’t think it at first but she had been beaten badly. When we got back to the van we had the vet waiting for her and he said she’s been beaten really badly, and from a couple of the cuts that she did have, she could have septicemia.”
Jenna was put on a drip, given antibiotics and painkillers, while volunteers gave her round-the-clock care.
In the early hours of the following morning the poor horse was struggling to breathe and instead of pacing around agitated and in pain as she previously was, she dropped to the ground.
“She laid down and rested, and we had a massive bed of straw for her so her poor head could be comfy, and she, basically, just died right there in front of us,” Martina said.
“We called the vet, but by the time he got there she had died already. She died very peacefully.
“She was only about three years old, and she shouldn’t have died.”
MLHR have posted images of Jenna on their Facebook page calling for justice for this poor horse.
“We want someone held accountable for this…Witnesses have come forward, they’ve seen Jenna being beaten in the past 2 weeks,” the post read.
“We want prosecutions, we want justice…This innocent pony was only 3 years old, she knew nothing but cruelty until her very last day! Justice for Jenna! RIP sweet girl.”
The post has attracted almost 1,000 comments from people, some questioning why those who claim to have witnessed the attack didn’t do anything about it.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help cover Jenna’s vet bill.
