The world lost an icon in 2006 when Steve Irwin, the beloved conservationist and Crocodile Hunter star, died at the age of 44. But while he may be gone, his family has kept his legacy of helping animals alive.
Steve’s wife Terri and their children Bindi and Robert continue to play a big part in protecting and showcasing Australia’s wildlife, from running the Australia Zoo to saving tens of thousands of animals during the bushfires last year.
And there’s been a lot of good news and blessings in the Irwin family lately: in March, Bindi and her husband Chandler celebrated the birth of their first child, a baby girl named Grace Warrior Irwin Powell.
The newborn is the first grandchild of the legendary Steve Irwin. And even though she’s just two months old, baby Grace is already following in her family’s footsteps as a little “Wildlife Warrior.”
Last month, the baby had her first animal encounter in her backyard at the Australia Zoo, where new grandma Terri introduced her to some chickens.
And now, she’s met another animal — one that is an iconic part of the Irwin legacy.
A photo posted by Chandler shows Grace meeting a koala for the first time. In the precious pic, two-month old and the animal are seen staring at each other curiously.
“We have had lots of smiles, the best giggles and we’ve met a koala!” Chandler wrote.
“Our gorgeous little Wildlife Warrior princess,” Bindi commented.
The picture is extra special because the Irwin family has always been known for caring for the wildlife of their native Australia, and the koala is one of the continent’s most iconic creatures.
The koala is also a very vulnerable species whose numbers took a drastic hit during last year’s wildfires. The Irwin family’s Australia Zoo helps to save an average of 800 koalas a year.
And of course, the koala was a favorite of Steve’s, and one of the most famous pictures of the Crocodile Hunter star is him holding one.
And it looks like after meeting her new koala friend, Grace has a new favorite animal: Bindi shared another photo of her two-month-old in an outfit with an adorable koala on it — which is on sale to support the family’s conservation efforts.
“Two months old and our beautiful Grace Warrior is all smiles!” Bindi wrote. “She is the happiest little light in the world.”
Two months old, and Bindi’s daughter is already taking after Steve! As an Irwin is sure to have many more great encounters with animals throughout her life, being raised with a love and respect for wildlife.
