There’s nothing more powerful than a mother’s love for her offspring. Across nature, most baby animals depend on their mothers for safety and survival — which makes it heartbreaking when a mom and baby are separated.
That was the case for a mother sloth and her baby who were separated by wildfires — and were overjoyed when they were finally reunited.
Last year, wildfires struck Bolivia, greatly affecting the local wildlife. Animals fled the bushland and ended up in the nearby town.
A mother sloth and her baby were among the animals fleeing to safety — but unfortunately, the two became separated along the way. According to The Dodo, the pair were apparently chased by unfriendly dogs, resulting in the mom losing hold of her baby.
We can’t imagine what this mother was going through after her child went missing. But while they were separated, the young sloth was picked up by a veterinarian named Marco Greminger.
But thankfully, the vet suspected that the young sloth might have been separated from his family.
Searching the area, Greminger found another sloth in a tree 300 feet away. Realizing it was likely the sloth’s mom.
He placed the baby near the mom… and in a touching moment caught on camera, the mom and child were reunited:
It’s not clear how long the mom and child were apart, but the two were definitely happy to see each other again.
The mother races over (or at least, as fast as a sloth can) and the two embrace.
“A mother’s heart is the most beautiful place for a child,” Greminger wrote. “In all the space of the Universe there is only one heart like this.”
Greminger took the two sloths to a local vet clinic, and they were found to be in in good condition. According to The Dodo, they were later released back into the wild at an ecological reserve.
What a sweet reunion! We’re so glad these sloths have been reunited!
