We’ve all gotten some fun surprises underneath our Christmas trees at some point in our lives, but what one woman found in her Christmas tree recently left her totally shocked.
TikTok user @brettbratt359 recently went viral thanks to a very unexpected holiday guest. It all started when she heard a sneeze inside her home, which she initially thought was from one of her pets.
But after hearing the noise again, Brett investigated further — and noticed a “big, long-looking rat tail” coming out of her Christmas tree.
“I was in shock. I didn’t know what it was,” she said in a video.
She then discovered a “giant gray, breathing ball of fur” inside her Christmas tree — a possum, who had somehow made his way inside and perched himself among her holiday ornaments.
“I am literally freaking out right now,” Brett says. “I have no idea how this possum got in my house and up into my tree and I’m trying to get it out but it will not let me and I just don’t know what to do.”
“I don’t know how it got in here, I don’t leave my doors open,” she added.
She posted another video, showing a closer look at the possum, refusing to budge from his hiding space in the artificial tree.
“You’re really cute, but I don’t know what to do,” the woman says.

In a follow-up video, the woman explained that animal control wouldn’t visit after hours, so she had to take matters into her own hands. After attempting to coerce the possum out with food, she decided to reach in and grab him, wearing protective gloves in case the animal got aggressive.
The possum wasn’t aggressive, but he was stubborn, to the point where she had to pluck his fingers off the branch, causing a small fall off the tree.
The ordeal wasn’t over, as the possum quickly ran under her couch, and she had to repeatedly chase the unexpectedly fast animal around her house.
“I moved the couch with all my force and just went for it and tackled him like an NFL football player and got him and calmed him down,” Brett said, before letting him out outside.
She said the possum wasn’t aggressive but did smell quite bad: “As an animal lover with three dogs, two snakes and a bearded dragon and a cat, I probably would have kept it if it didn’t smell so horrid,” she said.
Brett still isn’t sure how the possum got in, her only guess is that it ran inside after her pet dogs.
Wow, that is definitely a surprise — we’re glad to see this woman safely got her new possum friend out of her tree and hope he’s doing well back in the wild — hopefully he’s found a real, outdoor tree to hang out in.
